PMD Predicts Dense Smog Across Punjab in Coming Days

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that smog levels are expected to rise across several parts of the country, especially in eastern Punjab, in the coming days. The department urged local authorities to take immediate preventive measures to control pollution and protect public health.

Stable Weather Conditions May Trap Pollutants

According to the Met Office, the combination of calm winds, lower temperatures, and humidity will trap pollutants in the atmosphere. These weather conditions will likely lead to dense smog formation over key cities, including Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Nankana Sahib, Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, and Khanpur.

Experts explained that smog — a blend of smoke and fog — usually peaks between November and mid-December. With the ongoing dry and stable weather pattern, Punjab may witness a sharp increase in smog intensity during the next few weeks.

Pollution and Weather Creating Dangerous Air Quality

The PMD said that a mix of industrial pollution, vehicle emissions, and dry weather is worsening air quality in major cities. These conditions could severely affect human health and damage the environment if not addressed promptly.

Meteorologists warned that airborne toxins might cause a rise in respiratory infections, asthma attacks, and other pollution-related illnesses. Children, senior citizens, and individuals with heart or lung diseases are at greater risk.

Health and Traffic Risks Ahead

Officials cautioned that poor visibility due to smog may also increase road accidents and disrupt outdoor activities such as sports, travel, and school routines.

The PMD urged citizens to:

  • Avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during peak smog hours.

  • Use protective masks when stepping outside.

  • Limit vehicle use and support anti-pollution initiatives in their local areas.

Authorities across Punjab are being advised to intensify efforts to reduce industrial smoke, vehicle emissions, and open burning to mitigate smog impact in the coming weeks.
