After celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr with family and friends, many Dhaka residents who had traveled to their villages are now heading back to the capital. The return journey began on the morning of April 2, with noticeable crowds seen at two major entry points into Dhaka: Jatrabari and Sayedabad.

Increased Traffic at Key Entry Points

Since Wednesday morning, heavy passenger traffic has been observed at Jatrabari and Sayedabad, two of Dhaka’s busiest transport hubs. Commuters returning to the city have been arriving on long-distance buses coming from routes such as the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, Dhaka-Sylhet highway, and the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway. Passengers are being dropped off at various stops, including Signboard, Medical, Rayerbagh, Shonir Akhra, Kajla, Demra, Konapara, Jurain, and Dolaipar.

Professionals and Private Sector Employees Lead the Return

Many of the returnees are private sector employees, businesspeople, and other professionals who are resuming their work after the holiday. While the return journey has been largely smooth, some commuters have faced higher fare demands from auto-rickshaw drivers, though overall, the process has been manageable.

Commuters Share Their Experiences

Shariful Islam, a marketing professional traveling with his family, recounted his return journey. “I went to my village to celebrate Eid with my parents. Since my office reopens tomorrow, I had to return today,” he explained after getting off the bus at Sayedabad Jonpath intersection. “There were no significant issues during the trip, but I did have to pay an extra fare for the auto-rickshaw,” he added.

Ongoing Exodus from Dhaka

While many are returning, some commuters are still leaving Dhaka to visit their hometowns. The departure crowds have been visible at bus counters in Jatrabari Chourasta and Sayedabad Jonpath. Bus operators predict that the influx of returnees will continue over the next few days, with passenger numbers gradually normalizing.

Conclusion: A Gradual Return to Normalcy

The return of passengers to Dhaka after the Eid-ul-Fitr festivities reflects the end of the holiday period. With a continued influx expected over the coming days, Dhaka’s transport hubs are likely to remain busy as people resume their work and daily routines.
