Turkey’s Commitment to Supporting Syria’s New Leadership
Turkey is prepared to offer military assistance to Syria’s newly established Islamist-led government, which was formed by rebels who overthrew Bashar al-Assad. Defence Minister Yasar Guler stated on Sunday that Turkey is ready to provide the necessary support if requested by the new administration.
A Chance for the New Government
In his remarks to journalists, Guler emphasized that it is important to give the new leadership a chance to prove its commitment to stability and governance. He referred to the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) rebel alliance, which has its roots in Al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch and is considered a “terrorist” group by many Western nations.
HTS’s Pledge to Protect Rights and Uphold Law
Despite its past affiliations, HTS has made efforts to moderate its stance and has promised that the rights of all Syrians would be upheld under its governance, alongside a commitment to the rule of law. Guler also noted that HTS had pledged to respect Syria’s institutional structures.
Turkey’s support will depend on how the new administration develops, and Guler’s statements reflect a cautious approach to the evolving situation in Syria.
