Robert Patton, a seasoned farmer from Ballycarry, Northern Ireland, has made a significant investment of over £1 million to transform his traditional beef farming operation into a modern dairy unit. The new facility, known as Old Mill Dairies, represents a major shift in the farm’s focus and demonstrates a commitment to both technological innovation and animal welfare.

Transition to Dairy Farming Faced with the declining profitability of beef farming, Robert decided to explore dairy farming as a more sustainable and profitable alternative. The farm, which covers 190 acres, now includes a state-of-the-art dairy facility designed to be efficient, comfortable for the animals, and easy to manage with minimal labor.

Features of the New Dairy Unit The new dairy unit measures 145ft by 100ft and includes 126 cubicle spaces equipped with Cowcoon-Flex cubicles and comfort mattresses from Wilson Agriculture. To maximize efficiency, Robert installed two Lely Astronaut A5 robotic milking units. These advanced machines allow cows to be milked multiple times a day, averaging 3.7 milkings per cow. The unit also features a robotic feeding system, an out-of-parlour feeder, and a barn cleaner, all designed to reduce labor and enhance operational efficiency.

Focus on Animal Welfare Animal welfare was a top priority in the design of the new dairy barn. The use of transparent roof sheeting allows natural light to flood the barn, creating an environment that mimics natural conditions. This not only improves the cows’ fertility and reduces heat stress but also contributes to their overall well-being. The Holstein cows, which were purchased from a local farmer, have adapted quickly to the new robotic milking system, settling in within just a few days.

Technological and Safety Innovations In addition to the milking and feeding systems, the new facility includes two large silos for silage storage and a slurry bubbler system to minimize gas buildup in the tanks, enhancing safety. The construction, carried out by McKinty Construction, was carefully planned and executed, with attention to detail in every aspect, from the grooved slats for better cow traction to the French-made Jourdain feed locking gates.

Milk Production and Future Plans Currently, Old Mill Dairies is milking 90 cows, with plans to expand to 130 cows as more calves are born. The cows are producing an average of 35kg of milk per day, which is sold to Aurivo in the Republic of Ireland. Robert employs one staff member to oversee the dairy operations and is using artificial insemination (AI) to maintain and grow the herd.
